What is Thonglor? The Thonglor SF – Thai Restaurant Story
Thonglor is a section of Bangkok, Thailand in the northern Watthana district. It’s also referred to as Thong Lo, which translates to ‘molten gold’. For many visitors, the highlight of their trip to Bangkok is exploring, dining, and spending time in Thonglor. This hip and trendy neighborhood is recognized for its wide variety of night-life, boutiques, bars, and eateries. Some travel experts have even called Thonglor the “hippest district” in all of Asia. So for those that are into great food, shopping, people watching, and the arts, Thonglor is the perfect place to visit while in Bangkok, Thailand. Often times regarded as trendy or high-end, this area still offers a number of Thai eateries. Restaurant owners, Songkiat “Jap” Sukmakanant and Tanawat Srichoosin, named their Thai restaurant in San Francisco, The Thonglor SF, because of all these qualities.
When Sukmakanant lived in Thailand, he would often visit Thonglor to enjoy the many eateries, the arts, nightlife, and bars. He wanted to bring that same feel, ambiance and taste from Thailand to San Francisco.
Srichoosin had a dream to own a Thai restaurant in the US. He graduated and worked as an engineer in Bangkok, but cooking was always his passion since he was young. He took lots of cooking classes, and spent his spare time cooking and selling his dishes to his neighbors.
When Sukmakanant and Srichoosin met in Bangkok in 2017, they realized they had the same dream, so they started planning to one day open a Thai restaurant in the United States. Just 2 years later, their dream came to fruition as they opened The Thonglor SF in San Francisco, California in 2019. Truly the American Dream realized.
Popular dishes they ate back home in Thonglor, Bangkok, Thailand, are now on their menu at their San Francisco restaurant, The Thonglor SF. These include the ever-popular Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup, Green Curry, Thai Fried Rice, Papaya Salad, Silver Noodle Salad, along with various cocktails and beverages, like Thai Iced Tea or Thai Iced Coffee. This San Francisco eatery, located right across the street from the Curran Theater, is popular with diners before and after watching a play or show.
Get a taste of Thailand today, and visit The Thonglor SF, located at 420 Geary Street in San Francisco (Union Square, across the street from the Curran Theater), where you can get your fill of the arts and delicious Thai food just like in Thonglor, Bangkok. Customer Reviews for The Thonglor SF
Review from “The Infatuation”: “The Thonglor is a well-kept secret amidst tourist-saturated Union Square. The tiny Thai restaurant only has eight tables, so snagging one is a lot like accessing the city’s hottest speakeasy—except instead of hidden doors or off-menu cocktails, The Thonglor treats you to a parade of hearty curries, nose-clearing papaya salads, and the most flawless pad thai ever.” read more… https://www.theinfatuation.com/san-francisco/reviews/the-thonglor
